resurfacing
the superdrome (last update 4/23/03)
Resurfacing of the Superdrome
in Frisco, Texas began Saturday, March 29.
Ryan Crissey and Tim Goodwin of the Frisco
Cycling Club are leading a crew of local volunteers in the removal
of more than 12270 machine screws buried in the 708 plywood 1.125 inch
thick panels that make up the riding surface of the 250 meter 24 foot
wide velodrome. After removing thousands of the
protective wood-filler putty plugs, then the screws underneath, the
surface panels come loose (some VERY reluctantly) - and are then ready
to be lifted off the velodromes' steel support structure and put aside
for removal.
Removal of the old surface was expected to take a week
- but finished in the end only hours before the final new panels were
placed
on the surface. The first of two shipments of new surface panels arrived
April 8. First row of new panels went on at 10pm April 15.
The resurfacing was completed in advance of the US
National Team World Cup Qualifier scheduled for the Superdrome on April
25-27.
